The file extension .jpg indicates an image file. Specifically, JPG (or JPEG) stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group, which is a widely used method of compressing photographic images. This type of file is commonly used for digital photos and web images due to its ability to maintain a good balance between image quality and file size through lossy compression. As a result, .jpg files are ideal for sharing online and are compatible with a variety of software and platforms that support image viewing and editing.

In contrast, the other file types associated with the other options—video files, audio files, and document files—use different extensions. For example, video files typically might use extensions like .mp4 or .avi, audio files may have extensions such as .mp3 or .wav, and document files often feature extensions like .docx or .pdf. These distinctions clarify that the .jpg extension is specifically suited for image data.
